I remember when my cousins got their iPhone 4s. I think I was around 17, probably in my second year of college.
I was just as happy because around that time, I got one of their old iPhones, either a 2 or a 3. ๐
My aunts have always been generous to me. They supported my school needs, helped me with things I needed, and somehow made sure I always had a phone. Sometimes it was a new one, sometimes it was one of my cousins' old phones. They always made sure I had something, even though I had this terrible habit of losing my phones because for some reason I was frequently a victim of classmates who stole things. ๐ญ
When I graduated, I remember telling my cousins that someday, I would get an iPhone 8.
I think I was looking forward to it because I figured that by the time the iPhone 8 came out, I'd be earning enough to afford one. Hahaha. It was this little thing I had promised myself I'd eventually get when I was finally making my own money.
Then early 2018 came, and it was time to get my first phone that I actually chose and bought for myself.
Except, by then, there was an iPhone X.
And there was the Samsung Galaxy Note8, with its pen.
THE PEN.
I had spent all that time telling everyone I was going to get an iPhone 8, and then suddenly I had two other things to consider. ๐
I ended up getting the Note8, and I remember how difficult it was to choose.
Looking back, I think it's funny how excited I was about the idea of finally being able to afford my own phone. I had this specific phone in mind, and I was looking forward to the day I could buy it for myself.
And when that day finally came, I ended up getting a phone that was arguably better in a few ways. The Note8 had a bigger, sharper screen, two cameras, and, of course, the S Pen. THE PEN. I think younger me made a pretty good choice. ๐
But honestly, I'm just happy that I had that goal to look forward to. It was a small thing, but it represented something bigger to me: being able to earn my own money and buy something I wanted for myself.
I didn't end up with the iPhone 8 I promised myself. I got a Note8 instead.
The iPhone 8 was never really the point. I had aunts who made sure I had what I needed, and I was lucky to have that. But somewhere along the way, I also started looking forward to the day I could afford something on my own.
And when that day came, I did. Just with a different phone. ๐
